The American Quarter Horse is an American breed of horse that excels at sprinting short distances. Its name comes from its ability to outdistance other breeds of horses in races of a quarter mile or less. It is by far the most popular breed and currently boasts a population of about 3.2 million.

In the 1700s, colonists on the eastern seaboard of the United States began to cross imported English Thoroughbred horses with assorted “native” horses such as the Chickasaw horse (a breed developed by Native American people from horses descended from Spain, developed from Iberian, Arabian and Barb stock brought to the United States by the Conquistadors). What they got was a small, sturdy horse that was quick and nimble and showed signs of superior intelligence and a willingness to work.

Settlers in the colonies entertained themselves by match racing their horses. Since the main streets of their small towns were usually the only straight stretch of flat ground available, so this was where the races were held. The main streets were short, often a quarter mile or less; the settlers bred horses who were sprinters; they could start fast and sustain a burst of speed for a short distance. These horses were so adept at sprinting they became known as the “Celebrated Quarter of a Mile Race Horses.”

The settlers of the west bred their horses to the Spanish mares of the area, which were already known as tough, hardy, independent range horses unequaled for cow-sense and endurance. The crosses produced horses that were compact and heavily muscled.

As the quarter horse breed continued to gain popularity, its gentle nature led it to be used as a riding horse and due to its strength was soon performing other work on many of the early farms. The breed seemed to have a natural instinct for working around cattle as well. When the settlers began surging west in the 1800’s, the quarter horse breed was the horse of choice of the early cowboys, being used for cattle round-up due to their speed and agile maneuverability and quickly became the horses that cowboys counted on for their daily duties. As ranches grew in size and importance, the Quarter Horse became a fixture in the west.

The American Quarter Horse was also used for sprint races. As a result, more Thoroughbred blood was added back into the developing American Quarter Horse breed, as well as the addition of Arabian, Morgan and even Standard bred bloodlines.

The American Quarter Horse is best-known today as a show horse, race horse, reining and cutting horse, rodeo competitor, ranch horse, and all-around family horse. Quarter horses dominate rodeo events such as barrel racing, calf roping and team roping. Other stock horse events such as cutting and reining are open to all breeds but also dominated by American Quarter Horse. These horses are not only well-suited for western riding and cattle work; they have also been trained to compete in dressage and can be good jumpers. They are also used for recreational trail riding and in mounted police units. Their even temperament makes them a great animal for new riders learning about horses.

The modern Quarter Horse has a small, short, refined head with a straight profile, and a strong, well-muscled body, featuring a broad chest and powerful, rounded hindquarters. They usually stand between 14 and 16 hands high.

There are two main body types: the stock type and the hunter or racing type. The stock horse type is shorter, more compact, stocky and well muscled, yet agile. The racing and hunter type Quarter Horses are somewhat taller and smoother muscled than the stock type, more closely resembling the Thoroughbred. Their coloring varies from bay, black and brown and includes chestnut, palomino, buckskin and grey.

Technology-focused collaborations form a foundation of corporate planning strategies today. Such collaborations can be in the form of strategic alliances, joint ventures, open innovation or other legal structures. Regardless of how the participants characterize and legally structure such collaborations, the most common motivation for forming such alliances is to pool technology and R & D resources. When technology and R & D is involved, it must follow that IP (”intellectual property”) ownership issues should loom large in the planning stage of the collaboration. However, my experience shows that the parties rarely give appropriate consideration to IP ownership in the agreements that are supposed to fully set out the rights and responsibilities of the parties.

I can say with authority that IP issues are not usually given proper consideration in collaborative agreements because my expertise in this area results primarily from helping clients after their collaborations have failed. My clients typically sought my help after their collaborations went sour and they sought to exit the relationship with at least some valuable IP rights intact. In each of these situations, it was apparent that if my client had come to me for advice while they were executing the general business and financial parameters of the collaboration agreement, they may not have needed me to fix things on the back-end. Put simply, if I had been brought in on the front-end to put a fine point on IP ownership issues resulting from the collaboration, I would have been able to prevent questions regarding IP rights from even being a question.

My perspective about the preventable nature of IP ownership issues was confirmed when I recently attended a meeting of professionals who focus primarily on strategic alliances and other types of collaborative ventures. In this meeting of just over an hour, I counted at least 5 instances where someone commented something along the lines of “when the relationship goes sour, the IP issues cause problems.” From the sighs that accompanied the mention of IP ownership issues, I obtained the clear sense from these seasoned professionals that IP was not only a big problem, but also a common occurrence in their collaborations.

Smart business professionals should realize that when a significant problem occurs on a frequent basis, there likely is a failure in an associated business process. This is the case for IP ownership issues: most of the problems I have addressed on the back-end of a failed collaboration were fully predictable and the resulting problems could have been reduced or eliminated by proper planning. But if common IP ownership issues are not difficult for an Intellectual Property and Patent Business Strategist such as myself to predict and prevent, why do such issues still occur with such frequency in the collaboration space?

The answer is fairly easy from my vantage point: patent experts are typically not considered as possessing essential business knowledge and, as such, people like me are not seen as necessary participants in a collaboration deal. This is true even when the primary reason for the parties getting together in the first place is to pool existing technology and to create R & D synergies that will result in acceleration of innovation to the benefit both participants.

Admittedly, we patent experts have facilitated our not being involved on the front-end of business matters by traditionally focusing our practices on obtaining patents and litigating them for clients. We have left business matters to business professionals and transactional lawyers because, as a highly specialized profession, we felt more comfortable in the area of our own expertise. Also, we have not generally reached out to educate others about our somewhat “arcane” area of legal expertise. Our knowledge has remained closely held within the confines of patent practice and, as a result, we have been problem fixers. as opposed to preventing problems before they occur.

Business and legal experts reside today in functional silos that effectively prevent communication and education. Unless these silos are broken down, it is inevitable that business professionals will continue to destroy corporate value by not sufficiently including IP ownership in their collaboration agreements. Patent experts can continue to create value for ourselves by expending efforts to preserve our client’s IP rights when the collaboration fails.

The definition of insanity was said by Albert Einstein to be “doing the same thing again and expecting a different result”. To this end, it is insane for business professionals who deal in the collaboration space to continue to struggle with IP ownership issues over and over again because there is no doubt that complications and disappointment will inevitably arise. While not all of these issues can prevented by up-front analysis, I can virtually guarantee that the cost and effort of resolving IP ownership after a collaboration failure will be considerably less when a business-focused patent professional such as myself is brought in at the collaboration planning and agreement preparation stage.

There was no need to kill the count of Chartres during an unspecified battle: he died because of the continuations of a disease.

Then started the relation between Robert II and Berta.

In these times the marriages were some kind of agreements concluded as of the birth of the children. Women weren’t married with a man whom they had chosen and were often delivered to a man much older than they. Numbers of girls were thus married at 12 or 13 years old with old men being 40 years old more than they were. The widowhood of a young woman did not offer either the advisability to her of choosing her new husband: even being adult and having several children a woman constituted for her family an exchange currency, a good contract and was married with a person chosen by her parents, brothers, uncles, cousins…

Berta choose to marry Robert II because she was in love with him. Without love, she would never have agreed to let the anathema weigh on herself, Robert and France. Several months later, Gregoire V died and Sylvester II succeeded to him. He commuted Robert and Berta to a seven years penitence according to the discipline of the Church: If Robert would refuse to leave Berta he would be anathema. The same sentence was delivered against Berta.

If an excommunication rejected Robert and Berta out of the Church, the anathema condemned them to the damnation which was inconceivable for Middle Age characters. However, they did not yield and became bet. People ran away to their approach, closing doors and windows on their way. Their servants purified by fire the objects they had touched.

Five years later - by regard for Berta who he loved - Robert decided to officially repudiate her under the pretext that their union remained sterile. Then the pope admitted them within the Church. Nevertheless, Berta remained in the palate and continued to sleep each night in Robert bed.

However the pope was not stupid and forced Robert to marry another woman. Constance of Aquitaine was selected and never realized the relations which continued between her royal husband and Berta. Constance was miserly, malicious and cruel, only concerned about herself. She even persecuted her own sons. With her reign appeared the first “troubadours”. These poets came from the South-West of France, had short hair neither bores nor mustache and carried the funny ones of boots with bent end. According to the chronicles, these troubadours involved France in the vice.

However, Robert II kept the hope to obtain the pontifical authorization to divorce Constancy and to marry Berta. He made an inopportune act: he went to see the pope in Rome accompanied with Berta. His request was rejected once again and Robert had to be solved to live in the sin with the one who he loved more than his own life. One of the daughters of Constance and Robert will become the mother of the count of Flanders.

Since I often write about saving marriages, regaining the love and spark in your marriage, and restoring intimacy and closeness, I’m often asked what is the best way to react or proceed when you know that you husband wants to leave. The answer to this will greatly depend upon the situation, but I hope to give you options, ideas, help, and support in this article.

First off though, let me say that I generally find there are two different types of situations when a husband wants to leave. The first is the most volatile of the two and often, the husband is being hurtful in letting you know or informing you that he wants to wants to go. Usually, there has been some explosive situation like a huge fight, or the husband deciding to be mean being disrespectful. Often in these situations, the husband will leave no doubt that he has one foot out the door. This highly emotional situation may lead to name calling or hurtful phrases like him telling you that he “doesn’t love or find you attractive anymore,” or things like he’d be better off without you.

I had one woman tell me that her husband told her he wanted to leave because she was overweight. In these situations, it’s so important that you do not give your power away. The husband is being incredibly disrespectful, so before you attempt any communication or negotiations, I believe it is best to call him on it and insist that in moving forward, he treat you in respectful manner. There is virtually no chance in really working things out in a lasting and long term way if he is going to act this way.

Thankfully, many situations I am asked about involve less explosive situations where the husband wants to leave because of distance created, a loss of intimacy (i.e. he’s “fallen out of love,”) or because of external factors that have caused severe stress and strain on the marriage. In these examples, the marriage at one time was a good one and somehow the way has been lost.

In both instances, there are things that I have learned through experience and through research and counseling that you absolutely should not do, even when or if you desperately don’t want your husband to leave. These things may seem natural and right when your husband wants to leave, but they will really backfire in the end because you’ve given your power away and will ultimately make you appear less desirable.

I believe that you should not beg, stalk, engage, argue with, or constantly follow, text, or call your husband. You should not make false promises, appear desperate, or do anything which would elicit negative emotions or reactions.

It’s important to understand that if you want your husband to stay or want him back, you absolutely have to replace the negative feelings between you with positive ones. This may seem overly simplistic but it really isn’t. Husbands who are experiencing loving, affectionate, and empathic feelings toward their wife are much more likely to be receptive to what you have to say and to listen without already knowing the outcome.

The way you do this is to conduct yourself in a way that you can proud of and that you won’t regret later. You don’t want to act in a way that will push your husband further away from you. At the same time, you don’t want to be a pushover either.

As you can see, this is a delicate dance. You have to strike a balance between communicating with your husband and making him understand that you love him, don’t want him to leave, and want to make saving the marriage a high priority and having enough respect for yourself to not compromise your self respect and dignity.

The truth is, you will appear much more attractive to your husband if you retain your self esteem and self worth. You can still love your husband and go out and see your friends or do whatever it is that makes you happy and fulfilled without groveling. This will put you in a better emotional place and will likely peak your husband’s interest rather than affirming he really wants to go.

Sometimes, I have women approach me and say their husband wants to leave and he just will not talk with them at all or has completely shut them out because of a major fight or issue. Believe it or not, the process is still the same. You conduct yourself in a positive manner, do the things that will invoke positive feelings in both yourself and your spouse, and take baby steps until you’re husband is receptive again.

In some instances - when it’s clear the husband is dead set on leaving and is not going to change his mind, it’s best to just agree with your husband that the marriage has problems and if he really thinks he needs a break, then agree that you’d like the time to work on yourself as well. This will help to minimize a lot of the tension and distance. Hopefully, as the tension lessens you’re husband will have no reason to avoid or reject you. You’re also retaining your dignity and power, which is hugely important in this situation.

I had to use this approach when I trying to save my marriage (and was the only one who wanted to). I made a lot of mistakes, but eventually I was able to change course and regain my husband’s interest. As a personal chef and all-around food lover, I wondered about the kinds of food and recipes that would be offered at the 2008 Olympics. Do not get me wrong; I love the events in the Olympics; swimming, gymnastics, diving, water polo and beach volleyball, especially the women, equestrian and the white water rafting! Plus, there is so much excitement here with Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff being from this area.  One of my favorite Olympians is Gold medal winner, Cullen Jones, also from our area, is championing Make a Splash, a national child-focused water safety initiative created by the USA Swimming Foundation.

However, in light of concerns earlier this year about whether the food would be safe, I wanted to see how the controversy would resolve itself. In January, the media reported that the US and other teams would prepare there own meals.

One Chinese official responded that, under established international practice, foreign athletes cannot take their own food into the Olympic Village. She said China had developed an extensive monitoring and supervision system over the entire supply chain from the farms to the table and has been carefully monitoring what can and cannot enter the country, with safety issues in mind.

The US Olympic Committee made arrangements with several American companies to ship foods before the opening ceremony, and hired local vendors and importers to provide food and cooking equipment during the Games, including California strawberries and cheese.

There is a veritable feast of foods from around the world. For the approximately 16,000 athletes, coaches, team officials and media from more than 200 countries and regions, there is 24 hour food service in the Olympic Village. The great variety of food is being prepared and served by about 5000 Chinese and foreign chefs, kitchen staff and waiters.

Much of the fresh food for the athletes is being provided by specially certified Chinese farms and enterprises, many just outside Beijing. The U.S. meat producer Tyson Foods Inc, among others, is a supplier of the meats.

The Philadelphia based catering company, Aramark, was chosen to serve everything from bagels to pasta to steamed fish and vegetables to other healthy and home-cooked meals for those staying in the village. This is 14^th Olympics for Aramark. It is preparing about 100,000 meals daily. About 30% of the food is Asian cuisine; Japanese, Korean, authentic Chinese dishes and Indian. (n.b. India just celebrated its first ever individual Olympic gold medalist, Abhinav Bindra.)

For those who want cheeseburgers, fries and a Coke, there is good old Mickey Ds, the Official Restaurant of the Olympic Games for the 7^th time. The company built the largest free-standing restaurant in the world sporting the McDonald name on the Olympic Green. It seats more than 1,000 customers. It also has three other outlets at the Olympics.

Up to 10,000 Muslim athletes, coaches, officials and tourists from around the world are estimated to visit largest Muslim neighborhood in Beijing during the Olympic Games. The city government set aside 4.7 million U.S. dollars to open halal food outlets to ensure these practitioners have foods that meet Islamic dietary standards.

Many athletes say they are not worried about the food in the Village. They say it is like food at home; one said his coach told him to eat only in the village.

It is amazing to me that so many visitors, foreign students, teachers, news reporters and others who visit China, even as late as July, 2008, report that they never have problems with the food. To say nothing of all those Beijing residents.  Hmmmm. Well, anyway, enjoy the games.
