Advantages and Benefits of Bareback Riding

Posted by admin in different

Bareback riding (without the saddle) was always something kids did. You grabbed your pony from the field, hopped on and away you went.

Today we barely function without saddles. While saddles help us look pretty or be more functional, bareback riding has many for both posture AND .

Bareback riding allows you to feel the true movement of the horse, and sends the rider information that is imperative for higher training. It is this very idea that correlates to English saddles having as little between the horse and rider as possible, especially in dressage saddles, where the flaps are thin and flexible.

This is not particular to any discipline, and all disciplines and levels of riders can from it. I ride bareback one day a week, and it not only improves my riding performance, but also tends to tune up the horse as well, as he/she is able to feel softer, subtle cues instantly, without the interference of .

Bareback also allows the rider to improve balance, strength, posture, flexibility and a side of added . As the horse moves, you are able to feel the muscle groups respond, and you gain a sense of where the horses’ feet are placed in each movement. Part of being a good horseman is the ability to connect with the horses and feet. Many great riders will tell you that they feel as if they become one, almost like a centaur.

Riders are athletes. Regardless of the amount of riding you do, you need strong muscle groups. And strong muscles must stretch to be fully functional. Stretching while riding bareback gives you more room to move and gives the rider a better sense of balance. It cannot be done while your legs are glued to the horses’ sides. You must be free of tension, sitting with balance and freedom.

Longeing

This is a great way to begin, and remember to use a safe horse! Some people like to use the reins, but I find it best to tie off any equipment and just concentrate. Should the horse make any movements that are uncomfortable or alarm you, get off. Too many accidents happen because the rider stays aboard. If you find the horse may be quiet but not suitable while longeing, have the handler walk you around. Also, perform this within the confines of a roundpen, arena or any fenced area with softer ground. Never push the experience with an unsuitable horse. And a helmet! Many falls will dump you very close to the horses’ feet.

A great exercise that will prepare you for emergencies and give you better coordination is to practice dismounting. While walking, place your hands on the horses’ neck, push up and swing your leg over and jump down. If you do this enough times, you will remember it instinctively when you really need to dismount in a hurry. If the horse stops when being dismounted, reward him. You want to teach the horse to stop in case you off.

The weight (fat) of the horse will either provide comfort or be a hindrance. Thin horses provide a direct relation to the muscles, while chubbier horses provide comfort. Both will give you results, and while the middleweight horse may be best, if you have access to different types you will only improve your learning. Overweight horses do tend to throw the legs out improperly, and you will lose the truer sense of balance, so use the chubby horse less frequently.

When you first start out on the line at a walk, concentrate on feeling balance. Are you tipping to one side? Try shifting your weight until you feel centered. It also teaches you make with your seat bones. Try to ‘match’ the movements of the horse, as opposed to being stiff and tight. While walking, do stop/walk transitions, again ‘feeling’ the legs beneath you and the muscles around you.

If you have a quiet horse, close your eyes and ‘feel’ - this practice will fast-track information to the , and if you do this regularly, you will find your improvements will come faster.

The trot and canter

Move slowly, at your own pace through the gaits. Never let anyone move you faster than you are comfortable, as you may lose all and never ride again.

Often when you begin the trot, you will be thrown forward and back, sending mixed signals to the horse. If you work consistently, your balance will improve faster than the horse can be damaged. Remember, everything you do with your horse is training, even trying to ride bareback! Perfect practice makes perfect.

Speeding up

If you find the horse trots slowly in a saddle, but speeds up bareback, it is likely because you are gripping and moving your legs around and back. If that is the case, go back to the walk and regain balance by stretching and doing more exercises. Whenever you have a problem, go back to the slower gaits and work it out there.

Don’t use the reins to balance

Another problem that comes up with bareback riding is the use of the reins for balance. If you start to lose balance, grab the mane instead of the horses’ mouth. A horses’ mouth is a sacred place that should never know abuse, so try not to get into the habit of reaching for the reins.

Jumping Bareback

Jumping allows you to experience one of the more thrilling aspects of riding without a saddle. Before you venture into this, make sure the horse is capable and confident over small fences and poles. Start with ground poles or Cavaletti, moving from a pole and gradually adding as you gain . You can eventually do gymnastics on the longe line, but if you have progressed enough to begin jumping, you may want to ride free of the longe line.

One of the best things you will walk away with is added . Bareback riding involves a level of trust between you and the horse that riding in a saddle won’t teach as deeply. There is a sense of freedom, oneness and an exhilaration that’s hard to equal in any other sport. As you progress, you will find that your begin to learn balance intuitively, and I always state that in order to ride really well, you need to be able to move intuitively as opposed to mechanically. The only way to achieve this is to get out there and keep doing it. It’s like riding a bike: once you learn it’s with you forever.

Beginner Horseback Riding Lessons - American Quarter Horse Breed Description

Posted by admin in different

The American Quarter Horse is an American breed of horse that excels at sprinting short distances. Its comes from its ability to outdistance other breeds of horses in races of a quarter mile or less. It is by far the most popular breed and currently boasts a population of about 3.2 million.

Beginner Horseback Riding Lessons - History of the American Quarter Horse

In the 1700s, colonists on the eastern seaboard of the United States began to cross imported English Thoroughbred horses with assorted “native” horses such as the Chickasaw horse (a breed developed by Native American people from horses descended from Spain, developed from Iberian, Arabian and Barb brought to the United States by the Conquistadors). What they got was a small, sturdy horse that was quick and nimble and showed signs of superior intelligence and a willingness to work.

Settlers in the colonies entertained themselves by match racing their horses. Since the main streets of their small towns were usually the only straight stretch of flat ground available, so this was where the races were held. The main streets were short, often a quarter mile or less; the settlers bred horses who were sprinters; they could start fast and sustain a burst of speed for a short distance. These horses were so adept at sprinting they became known as the “Celebrated Quarter of a Mile Race Horses.”

The settlers of the west bred their horses to the Spanish mares of the area, which were already known as tough, hardy, independent range horses unequaled for cow-sense and endurance. The crosses produced horses that were compact and heavily muscled.

As the quarter horse breed continued to gain popularity, its gentle nature led it to be used as a riding horse and due to its strength was soon performing other work on many of the early farms. The breed seemed to have a natural instinct for working around cattle as well. When the settlers began surging west in the 1800’s, the quarter horse breed was the horse of choice of the early cowboys, being used for cattle round-up due to their speed and agile maneuverability and quickly became the horses that cowboys counted on for their daily duties. As ranches grew in and importance, the Quarter Horse became a fixture in the west.

The American Quarter Horse was also used for sprint races. As a result, more Thoroughbred blood was added back into the developing American Quarter Horse breed, as well as the addition of Arabian, Morgan and even Standard bred bloodlines.

The American Quarter Horse is best-known today as a show horse, race horse, reining and cutting horse, rodeo , ranch horse, and all-around family horse. Quarter horses dominate rodeo events such as barrel racing, calf roping and team roping. Other horse events such as cutting and reining are open to all breeds but also dominated by American Quarter Horse. These horses are not only well-suited for western riding and cattle work; they have also been trained to compete in dressage and can be good jumpers. They are also used for recreational trail riding and in mounted police units. Their even temperament makes them a great animal for new riders learning about horses.

The modern Quarter Horse has a small, short, refined head with a straight profile, and a strong, well-muscled , featuring a broad chest and powerful, rounded hindquarters. They usually stand between 14 and 16 hands high.

There are two main types: the type and the hunter or racing type. The horse type is shorter, more compact, stocky and well muscled, yet agile. The racing and hunter type Quarter Horses are somewhat taller and smoother muscled than the type, more closely resembling the Thoroughbred. Their coloring varies from bay, and brown and includes chestnut, palomino, buckskin and grey.

How Do I Strengthen My Horse’s Weaker Hind Leg?

Posted by admin in different

In the last article, I discussed using benign antagonism to make your horse’s soft side more “stiff” and his stiff side more “soft” and bendable.

Your horse’s weaker hind leg is the leg on his soft side. There’s nothing wrong with your horse! Almost every horse has a weaker hind leg because few horses are ambidextrous. The weaker leg is the one on your horse’s “soft” or hollow side. The stronger one is on his stiff side.

The weak hind leg doesn’t step directly underneath your horse’s . Your horse displaces it slightly to the side to avoid carrying weight with it. On the other hand, the hind leg on the stiff side carries more weight.

The issue here goes back to that saying “use makes the muscle”. If you don’t work on strengthening the weaker leg, that leg gets weaker, and the stronger one gets stronger.

This can lead to all kinds of problems down the road like having an uneven with the bit, uneven lengthenings, and difficulty doing lateral work in one direction.

Avoiding carrying weight with the weaker hind leg can be very subtle. Often your horse will put this leg only an inch or so to the side. An observant ground person can tell you which hind leg your horse is “unloading”. Walk and trot straight away from her. Then change direction and do the same. If your horse’s left hind is weaker than his right hind, he’ll carry it slightly to the left regardless of which direction you’re going.

Since this evasion can be subtle, your benignly antagonistic correction can be subtle as well. The solution is to ask your horse’s left hind leg to do a little “weight-lifting”. Do this by moving his hindquarters an inch or so to the right so this leg has to step under his . Ask for this position in both directions on all lines and curves. This will give his weaker hind leg an opportunity to get stronger. One word of here. Since you know this leg is weaker, be sure you give your horse lots of walk breaks so he can relax his muscles. There’s a line between strengthening muscles and making them sore.

If your horse is a bit more educated, you can do the same sort of exercise by always placing him in a very slight shoulder-fore or renvers position when you track to the left. When you track to the right, put him in a very slight haunches-in position. Every position should place his left hind leg a hair to the inside of his left front leg. Once again, a displacement of an inch or two is more than enough to do the job.

How to Prevent IP Ownership Issues When a Strategic Alliance, Joint Venture Or Collaboration Fails

Posted by admin in different

Technology-focused collaborations form a foundation of planning strategies today. Such collaborations can be in the form of strategic alliances, joint ventures, open innovation or other legal structures. Regardless of how the participants characterize and legally structure such collaborations, the most common motivation for forming such alliances is to pool technology and R & D resources. When technology and R & D is involved, it must follow that IP (”intellectual property”) ownership issues should loom in the planning stage of the collaboration. However, my experience that the parties rarely give appropriate consideration to IP ownership in the agreements that are supposed to fully set out the rights and responsibilities of the parties.

I can say with authority that IP issues are not usually given proper consideration in collaborative agreements because my expertise in this area results primarily from helping clients after their collaborations have failed. My clients typically sought my help after their collaborations went sour and they sought to exit the relationship with at least some valuable IP rights intact. In each of these situations, it was apparent that if my client had come to me for while they were executing the general and parameters of the collaboration agreement, they may not have needed me to fix things on the back-end. Put simply, if I had been brought in on the front-end to put a point on IP ownership issues resulting from the collaboration, I would have been able to prevent questions regarding IP rights from even being a question.

My perspective about the preventable nature of IP ownership issues was confirmed when I recently attended a meeting of professionals who focus primarily on strategic alliances and other types of collaborative ventures. In this meeting of just over an hour, I counted at least 5 instances where someone commented something along the lines of “when the relationship goes sour, the IP issues cause problems.” From the sighs that accompanied the mention of IP ownership issues, I obtained the clear sense from these seasoned professionals that IP was not only a big problem, but also a common occurrence in their collaborations.

Smart professionals should realize that when a significant problem occurs on a frequent basis, there likely is a failure in an associated process. This is the case for IP ownership issues: most of the problems I have addressed on the back-end of a failed collaboration were fully predictable and the resulting problems could have been reduced or eliminated by proper planning. But if common IP ownership issues are not difficult for an Intellectual Property and Patent Strategist such as myself to predict and prevent, why do such issues still occur with such frequency in the collaboration space?

The answer is fairly easy from my vantage point: patent experts are typically not considered as possessing essential knowledge and, as such, people like me are not seen as necessary participants in a collaboration deal. This is true even when the primary reason for the parties getting together in the first place is to pool existing technology and to create R & D synergies that will result in acceleration of innovation to the both participants.

Admittedly, we patent experts have facilitated our not being involved on the front-end of matters by traditionally focusing our practices on obtaining patents and litigating them for clients. We have left matters to professionals and transactional lawyers because, as a highly specialized profession, we felt more comfortable in the area of our own expertise. Also, we have not generally reached out to educate others about our somewhat “arcane” area of legal expertise. Our knowledge has remained closely held within the confines of patent practice and, as a result, we have been problem fixers. as opposed to preventing problems before they occur.

and legal experts reside today in functional silos that effectively prevent communication and education. Unless these silos are broken down, it is inevitable that professionals will continue to destroy value by not sufficiently including IP ownership in their collaboration agreements. Patent experts can continue to create value for ourselves by expending efforts to preserve our client’s IP rights when the collaboration fails.

The definition of insanity was said by to be “doing the same thing again and expecting a different result”. To this end, it is insane for professionals who deal in the collaboration space to continue to struggle with IP ownership issues over and over again because there is no doubt that complications and disappointment will inevitably arise. While not all of these issues can prevented by up-front analysis, I can virtually guarantee that the cost and effort of resolving IP ownership after a collaboration failure will be considerably less when a -focused patent professional such as myself is brought in at the collaboration planning and agreement preparation stage.

She Loves You, He Loves You Not

Posted by admin in different

SHE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT

Who Is Some Who Loves You?

1. Someone who sees the best in you.

If you were lucky enough to grow up with healthy parents, you have experienced the feeling of having someone who has always looked at your good qualities. Many of us missed that experience. You will be a lucky person if you have found a mate who is always looking at your ’silver lining’. Too often today people are more than willing to judge you by your errors, not by your potential.

2. Someone who gives you the of the doubt.

There are so many times in your life when you need that little edge, that little opportunity to take just that extra step. It can seem as if your efforts are going nowhere and although you want to keep moving forward, there are so many negatives staring you in the face. That person who knows things could go either way for you but takes that leap to believe you will make it is the person who is more valuable to you than gold.

3. Someone who watches over you.

You need a guardian angel who is there, waiting to catch you if you , ready to help you when you stumble, ready to pave the way for you when you cannot get moving. There are people who love you who do just that. There are people who do not make a big deal out of saving your bacon. Do you know who they are?

4. Someone to watch you back.

You never know these days who is waiting to catch you off guard, to make sure you don’t do well, to sabotage your efforts. You like to think that people will rejoice when you

do well. Many don’t. If someone ‘has your back’ and runs interference for you when you are trying to run the gauntlet through life, give that person a big ‘thanks’ plus lots of your attention.

5. The person who tells you we all make mistakes.

You hate to be around that judgemental, harsh person who reminds you, ‘I told you so’, when things so south. You don’t need anyone else telling you what you already know. On the other hand there are people who just let you know that the only way any of us learn is through experience. When you have really ended up in the dumper and blew it, stay close to the one who knows that the person who hasn’t done anything wrong hasn’t done anything much.

6. The person who gives you from the heart, not from the head.

When the situation gets rough and some big decisions need to be made, it’s to have people outline the pros and cons of a problem and give you ‘head’ answers. But if you need a nudge sometimes to tip the scales, you always listen to this person who knows you must do what will let you live with yourself and have self respect.

7. The person who won’t be the ‘yes ’ who agrees with you

No one who loves you is going to give you the green light and tell you to let er rip if it’s clearly going to be bad for you. It’s sad that often you surround yourself with people who tell you what you want to hear. The one who loves you will tell you to get help for a drinking or drugging problem, to stop the extramarital affair, and to be a good and decent person.

8. Someone who tells you to knock back, smell the roses, and enjoy life part of the time.

If you are a person who is a real performer and doer, there are likely to be people around you who enjoy the fruits of your labor and want you to do even more. Sometimes you may even see yourself as only valuable when you are giving, doing, and performing. Listen to the person who tells you that life is short and you need breaks and some R&R. That is the person who is looking out for you and your health.

9. The one who smiles at you and means it.

The person who loves you looks at you with eyes that smile and mean it. Too many people give you that slick smile, that quick pat on the back, and then forget that you even exist.

The eyes are the windows of our soul and you can read into a person’s smile if it is saying, ‘You are a person and I want to be with you as long as possible’. Don’t for any phony smile that attracts you off in another direction, only to leave you stranded and alone.

10. Someone who sees you as , inside and out.

You know you aren’t perfect. There are only too many examples of you looking around and thinking that you have flaws and aren’t like the people on television. The person who loves you sees you through eyes of acceptance with no conditions. As you gain a few pounds and your hair gets thin, the person who sees you as attractive, inviting, and appealing is the person who loves you all the way, no strings or demands.

Nowadays, it’s really important to know who loves you. Everything in our society is throw away, and many people have carried that over into the most important relationships in their lives. Think hard and look carefully. People who love you , like comfortable , are easy on the heart, mind, and soul.

Towing A Horse Trailer

Posted by admin in different

Safe towing of your horse trailer is absolutely essential for the well-being of you, your horse(s) and other road users.

Take into the following checklist every time you tow your horse trailer to minimize safety risks:

  1. After securely loading your horse(s), make all the final before you set-off. Ensure that the stalls are secure, all the doors are closed and there are no obstructions or anything left in the trailer that could cause injury. Test the hitching system, brakes and lights before you drive away.
  2. Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum carrying weight for safe towing of the horse trailer. Check the trailer specifications. The towing weight should be clearly displayed on the trailer. Remember that the towing vehicle should always be substantially heavier than the trailer for stability. If you exceed the weight restriction or even get close to it, there is a greater risk that you will lose control in transit.
  3. Plan your trip carefully. Try to find out about any areas of congestion or road closures before you set-off. Always have an alternative route in mind.
  4. Drive smoothly and with care. Imagine you have a mug of tea on the dashboard! You do not want to spill it, so take your time at corners and junctions. Start and stop slowly. Look for any possible problems.
  5. If you are traveling long distance, schedule regular breaks. Use this time to check your horse(s) and that everything is with the trailer.
  6. Have an emergency plan if your towing vehicle or horse trailer breaks down. Check that your breakdown cover includes your horse trailer.
  7. Ensure that you have a well-stocked first aid kit and emergency supplies on board at all times.
  8. Carry an emergency breakdown kit. This might contain items such as a jack, jump-leads, WD-40, a good flashlight, safety cones in case you break down, electrical duct tape, spare tire and tire-changing tools.

Your cargo is precious so always make thorough each time you plan a journey and drive safely!
