Taking Baby Steps to Reach Your Goals and to Achieve Greatness Like Earnhardt and Trump

Posted by admin in different

Ask any famous person that achieved greatness what they did that was different - they would tell you they made their goals realistic and took action. The rest is history. Napoleon Hill stated “Whatever the mind of can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” He used a positive mental and the use of small, realistic steps to achieve greatness. He went from a poor beginning in a log cabin to one of the best selling authors and an advisor to congressmen, presidents and so on. W. Clement Stone took $100 and with this same use of creating realistic steps and taking action he built one of the largest multi million dollar companies in America.

They may not have the current publicity or notoriaty of Donald Trump, Dale Earnhardt or similar, but they came from much humbler starts. Donald Trump was born into a real estate magnate family. Dale Earnhardt was born into a established race car family in Kannapolis North Carolina. Now thats not to say that Donald Trump and Dale Earnhardt are not great people (Dale Earnhardt formed one of the largest and winningest Nascar teams and was very philanthropic and helped a lot of people through his charitable activities). What I am getting at here is that most of us don’t have magnates or millions in our families, but that in no wy means we cannot achieve greatness, riches beyond our wildest dreams, etc… Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone actually started with much less and in worse times and conditions than we have ever known (the great depression era).

What drove Napoleon Hill and W. Clement Stone to greatness was two things. (1)They planned realistic steps to reach attainable goals ( steps). They didn’t just wake up one day and say my only goal is to be rich and retire tomorrow. They made plans and kept slowly raising the bar every time they would attain one of their goals. (2)They took action. You wouldn’t believe how many times I hear people state all the things they are going to do or would like to do. I recently attended a young Cornell Alumni meeting where the talk was mostly about grand future plans, or what they would like to do but they don’t have time, the conditions aren’t right, etc… You have to start somewhere. If you take too big of a step you will probably become defeated and not continue. It is better to take small attainable steps. Each time you attain one of these steps or your goal raise the bar a little. It will slowly move you closer to your dream and give you a great boost in self . You have to plan out little steps and then you have to take action. This will seperate you from everyone else - the majority of people live life day to day, pay check to paycheck with little or no action or planning. You can always find these people complaining about how bad the economy is, taxes are too high, etc…

The best thing you can do is find a mentor and surround yourself with positive achievers and realize it will take a lot of effort. Lance Armstrong didn’t win the Tour de France 6 times by accident and battle cancer at the same time. He was driven, set goals, and took action on a daily basis. He also realized greatness would not happen overnight. Greatness didn’t come overnight for Dale Earnhardt either. He raced hard for many years, suffered crashes that would have kept most people off the track and faced fear head on. With his tanacity, fierce vigor and drive he became the greatest Nascar legend of all time. Now his son, Dale Jr., continues his racing legacy and awesome philanthropic and charitable activities. If you take the effort to take action, use steps to attain goals and make realistic goals you cannot and will not fail. Failure will not be a word in your vocabulary.

Now you know achieve greatness. Set goals for yourself. Make them realistic and take realistic steps to achieve them. Take action - this will seperate you from 99.9% of everyone else. They are afraid to take action and will never attain greatness. What do you think Lance Armstrong said when critics said he could not win the Tour de France, or that he could not do a repeat win of it? What do you think Dale Earnhardt said when the critics stated he could not overcome his fathers shadow in racing? They went on to become the greatest of their time. What will you do?

It is never to late to decide to take control of your life and make something great of it. Look at Sam Walton. He didn’t like working with a Ben Franklin franchise and their rules. So he started his own retailing company and became the largest retailer in the world. If you make attainable goals, take action, and lay out steps to achieve these goals there is no way you will fail and there’s no telling what you can or will achieve. Some of our greatest achievers have come from the most humbling positions. I wonder what greatness you can and will achieve.

Creating Your Future Nostalgia

Posted by admin in different

Today, 67% of with children under the age of 18 are employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Results from my own survey show that find trying to be “Super ” is not so super - leaving them depleted, resentful, stressed, and feeling guilty. If you’re a working parent reading this, I’m sure I don’t have to tell YOU that!

As working parents, we want to get it all done AND feel good about it. Don’t you wish that your future self could tell you what you can do so that you can stop trying to be “Super ” and live without regrets? Here is an opportunity to learn from someone with a lifetime of experience. We can all learn something from her insight. The late Erma Bombeck wrote this after she found out she had cancer:

If I Had My Life To Live Over

by Erma Bombeck

If I had my life to live over, I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the “good” living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television - and more while watching life.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I’d have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.”

There would have been more “I love yous”.. More “I’m sorrys” …

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute… look at it and really see it … live it…and never give it back.

At the heart of this is what EVERY mother (or father) wants for themselves and family. Too often people wait until the opportunities are gone before learning these things.

Instead of waiting, the beginning of 2008 is a great time to use forward thinking to create the memories (or future nostalgia) you desire for yourself, your family, and . What will you miss when it’s gone? Will you miss the time you didn’t spend or things you didn’t do with your children, family and self? Where do you want to take your this year? On December 31, 2008 what do you want to remember most about this year?

Wasted time can only bring regret, sorrow and guilt. Procrastination is a thief of time and livelihood. Tomorrow is a mystery but you have the opportunity to create your future nostalgia NOW. If you wait around for good things to happen, you will always be waiting. Your life and future is at your fingertips. Believe it and live it.

As Erma realized and expressed, there’s no point trying to be “Super ” at the expense of really living your life. Next month’s article will focus on bring your future nostalgia to reality!

The 30 Minute Energy Infusion

Posted by admin in different

“Fatigue makes cowards of us all” was a motto of the late great football Vince Lombardi. His coaching record in the NFL was outstanding.. His ability to motivate and inspire average players to greatness was his legacy. And he believed 100% in what he practiced and preached to his players. Vince was aware of how fatigue affected his players and their “will”. He knew how easy it was to make excuses and perform poorly as they fatigued. Vince and his Green Bay Packers were able to play as hard in the last minute of the game as the first. Many times they won the game because of physical conditioning. We can all perform at our optimal levels consistently if we develop good “energy” habits.

It’s not only on the football field when fatigue limits us. Fatigue clouds our life vision, robs us of our greatness. When we tire easily everyday tasks are harder and take longer to perform. Our ability to concentrate is compromised. Even driving a car is more difficult and dangerous. It can even become obvious to our superiors at work. It AFFECTS every area of our lives.

Fatigue is amplified by unhealthy habits. Energy is increased and created by positive habits. If you are constantly running low on energy at work in the afternoon be aware that you can change this. Try all of the following suggestions for 30 minutes at see what happens.

Walk briskly for 10 minutes outside in the sun

Drink 16 ounces of fresh non-tap water

Do 50 jumping jacks

Eat 2 servings of whole unprocessed food

Take 20 deep , slow breaths

Do 5 different stretches

Meditate deeply for 5 minutes

This routine should take you no more than 30 minutes. Perform it at mid-day break or lunch. Do it INTENSELY. The energy infusion will last for 3-4 hours.

Have fun and prosper !!

Basketball And Points You Need To Know!

Posted by admin in different

is one of only a few sports where the womens have grown at the same rate as the mens. Originally it was invented in America but has spread to an international sport with a host of countries having quality players. consists of two teams of five players, each team trying to outscore each other by throwing the ball through the oppositions basket from above.

Basically you have to score more points than your opponents while trying to stop your opponents from scoring in the other basket. You score two points for a successful throw or three points if the throw is from behind the three throw arc. The measurement from the basket to the arc is 6.25 metres in international games but in NBA games this increases to 7.24 metres. At any point during the game a team can make up to seven substitutions but only when play is stopped.

The match is played in four quarters each lasting 10 minutes internationally and 12 minutes for NBA. At half time 15 minutes are aloud for a break and 2 minutes for the other breaks. has quite a fan base because of its action and sometimes heated arguments on court adds to the excitement.

The person with the ball on court can not move both feet unless dribbling and must keep his hand on top of the ball when dribbling. The ball has to stay in court for the game to continue, if the ball goes out of court then the team with possession before the ball went out of court looses possession.

is a team game and with this in mind generally the really good teams are not just good individually but good as a team, each member relies on the others to perform well and everybody knows what they should be doing or who they should be marking. You should always be the pass rather than the spectacular shot.

Many people believe that you are born with the ability to jump high but this is not true. A vertical jump is the distance is the difference between your standing reach and the measurement when you jump from a flat footed start. The average vertical jump of a professional NBA player is between 28 to 34 inches. Exercises are good for increasing the ability to jump higher; some of these include step-ups, squats, and lunges. These exercises can be done in a controlled manner which increases the muscles in the legs, knees and hips.

Step-ups are usually done with the use of dumbbells and a box or bench. The idea is to stand upright with a dumbbell in each hand, and onto the box and then step back down. The box or bench should be high enough so your leg bends to 90 degrees. You should do this about 10 to 15 times for each leg, and then repeat on the other leg. If you regularly perform different exercises you will increase your muscles which in turn will improve your vertical jump.

Lunges are sometimes done with either dumbbells or a bar across your upper back.
You stand in an upright position and step forward as far as you can, keeping your back straight and upright at all times. to get your leg bent at an angle of 90 degrees and return to the standing position. Do this 10 to 15 times again with one leg and then change legs and repeat.

Squats are quite hard but are one of the best exercises to do for athletes and also one of the most dangerous if not performed right. Stand with the bar on your shoulders not on your neck. Stand straight with your knees directly above your feet.

If You Want to Do Something - Do It!

Posted by admin in different

How many times do I have to learn this lesson before it doesn’t surprise me each time I encounter it? Years ago I learned that if I wanted to become a consultant (that was before I trained to be a ), I had to simply find an and start practicing my craft.

I rounded up a group of people in New York, led a workshop based on materials I borrowed from my mentor and could truthfully legacy perfume I was a Consultant from that day forward. It was as important for my self-esteem as anything else that I had that experience under my belt. That gig led to my consulting at Monsanto, which led to my outplacement job with the first outplacement company in St. Louis. That experience led to my own , a book deal for Fired for Success: Turn Losing Your Job into the Opportunity of a Lifetime! By simply doing something, I started a chain of events that extends more than 25 years into the future!

So yesterday, when I saw two stories on CBS Sunday Morning that contained the same lesson, it didn’t take me long to make a note to myself to write about this issue.

Being Discovered on YouTube

You might like the music of the rock group, Journey or even have purchased one of their 70 million albums sold over the years. If you are a fan, you might know that this group has been in decline since its lead tenor, Steve Perry, left in 1996 to have a hip replaced and never returned. Two other lead singers who joined the group in the past decade never captured the magic Perry had created.

This difficult situation put the whole band in disarray for years. Yet when their 1981 signature hit “Don’t Stop Believin” played last year at the end of the final episode of the popular HBO series Sopranos, the band saw a great opportunity for a comeback … if only they had a lead singer!

Dean Castranovo, one of the band members, told Sunday Morning he was driven nuts by not having a singer and being able to go out on the road at that point.

Not leaving the situation to chance, another member of the group, Neal Schon used the Internet to search for a new lead singer. He was a “legacy sound, a tenor voice… with soul and emotion.”

After two days of surfing YouTube, he came upon a video of Arnel Pineda, a 40 year Filipino who sang with a group called The Zoo, mimicking everybody from Sting to Led Zeppelin.

When he heard the young singer belt out Journey’s own “Faithfully,” Schon picked up the phone and called the Philippines, inviting Pineda for an audition in the United States. After he arrived, Arnel Pineda was immediately asked to join the group - there was no doubt in his talent.

A Remarkable Background

Arnel Pineda has been singing from an early age, remembering at five how his mother would ask him to sing along with her as she crooned with Barbara Streisand and Karen Carpenter on the radio.

His parents, both tailors, would create outfits for him to use in performances as they sent him out to participate in singing contests. Being shy, he would often run away as they chased after him with a tape measure.

Sadly, his mother died when Arnel was 13 after a long illness which bankrupt the family. For some period he was homeless, with no more than a piece of biscuit to eat for three days at a time.

But he used the gift his mother gave him, crooning in Hong Kong nightclubs.

Like the line from the song, Pineda’s to all of us is not to give up - “don’t stop believin.”

What his story reinforces is the power of just doing what he wanted to do - not hoping to sing with a big band and waiting around for his ship to come in - but getting into action and grabbing whatever singing opportunities he could find. Providence honored a who was already doing what he intended to do - sing.

Starting From Scratch

Another story exemplifies the same lesson: sweater Goldberg, a high school dropout from the projects of New York today is one of only 13 people who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award.

She too started from humble beginnings even though she had a sense from an early age she wanted to act. In her case, she actually got caught up in drugs on the streets of New York. After a stint in rehab, she reoriented herself to her dream. Her experience growing through her naivety on the streets grew into various character sketches she wove into her own one monologue performance she called The Spook show.

Taking the initiative to create and perform her character sketches brought Whoopi Goldberg notice. Little by little she made her way from stage to stage until she ended up impressing director Mike Nichols who was instantly taken in and offered to bring the show to Broadway. Among the 156 sold-out performances which were also taped and shown on HBO, she caught the attention of director Steven Spielberg who cast her in The Color Purple.

Again, the moral of this story is that Whoopi did herself her biggest favor by getting into action and creating her performance - doing what she wanted to do by just doing it!

The question is: What could you just do - get into action on - that will propel you into the future that’s awaiting you?

Pistons-Bulls - Quarter-by-Quarter Game Posts, And Post-Game Wrap Up

Posted by admin in different

Chicago Bulls, NBA - Chicago Bulls/Detroit Pistons - Posted end of 1st Quarter

Theo Ratliff starting due to the injury to Rasheed Wallace. Both the Pistons and Bulls start off a bit cold. Bulls 3 quick fouls on Detroit in the first 2 minutes. Flip Saunders is 162-64 as Detroit Pistons Head , which is sensational, but coco chanel quotes are looking to him for post-season success.

Bulls allowing Detroit too many second chances on offense. Larry Hughes playing tough defense on Chauncey Billups-good effort by Hughes. Larry Hughes definitely adds extra shooting punch for the Bulls. Pistons begin game 1-8 shooting. Hinrich again early foul trouble, out with 2 in first 5 minutes.

Billups blows by Ben Gordon for layup and free throw. Story of the Chicago Bulls -always worked over by bigger NBA guards. Drew Gooden looks tentative, missing on some ill-looking shots. Pistons 9-9 from the line. Billups hits big 3-pointer in corner to put Pistons up 16-12.

Bulls beginning to look confused on offensive end. Billups 10 points. Joakim Noah very nice move in the paint and the foul. Like fresh air to see a Bulls big making an offensive move with authority. Shannon Brown looking very good with Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich on the bench with foul trouble. He will get some playing time tonight.

Pistons killing Bulls on offensive boards, even without Sheed. Richard Hamilton sinks a 3-pointer as a result, Detroit Pistons up 21-17. Pistons beginning to pull away at end of Quarter, hitting their shots while Bulls are running cold.

Detroit Pistons 29, Chicago Bulls 19

Chicago Bulls, NBA - Chicago Bulls/Detroit Pistons - Halftime Post

Chicago Bulls outrebounded by Detroit Pistons 16-8 in the 1st Quarter. Aaron Gray looked awful in his few minutes. Joakim Noah back in after only a few minutes rest. Pistons up 31-19, and if Bulls are not careful, this could get out of hand.

Tyrus Thomas playing quiet minutes tonight. Big question where the offense is going to come from at this rate. Luol Deng put in as shooting guard-interesting move by Boylan. Deng went right away to post up smaller Detroit guard. That is something I was desperate to see Luol Deng do this season. Bulls being careless with the ball, committing silly turnovers.

Ben Gordon with high-arc jumper to bring Bulls to within 9, 34-25. Bulls must do better job on boards. Gordon another jumper-getting warmer. Gordon a 3-pointer. 34-30 Pistons-time out Detroit Pistons.

If only Ben Gordon could be more consistent-he would be an all-star for sure. The guy is instant offense. Billups hits an open jumper on 2nd-chance shot. Bulls got close and then the Pistons starters are back-back to 6 point lead (38-32). Billups another key jumper after spirited Bulls defensive stand.

Pistons methodical with Billups/Hamilton quietly working over smaller Bulls guards. Drew Gooden scoreless, doing his best Ben Wallace impersonation. Bulls just look plain outclassed, like Pistons can roll whenever they want to.

Detroit up 49-37, but Luol Deng dunks open under the basket. Theo Ratliff strong on the boards tonight. Billups a crushing 3-pointer….Mr. Big Shot at it again, 20 points on the night.

Detroit Pistons 54, Chicago Bulls 43

Chicago Bulls, NBA - Chicago Bulls/Detroit Pistons - Posted End of 3rd Quarter

Ben Gordon the only reason the Chicago Bulls are still in this game, going 6-6 from the field. Pistons outrebounding Bulls 27-15 at the Half, translating to 13-4 2nd-chance points in favor of Detroit.

Luol Deng nice set play to open the second-half, cutting the lead to 9. Deng being aggressive, taking it to the basket. Luol Deng should do more of this, as it is one of the best dimensions to his game.

Bulls down by 7 with 9:00 left, but you feel like the Pistons can just turn it on when they want to. They look bored at times, waiting for the NBA Playoffs, maybe. 4th foul on Kirk Hinrich-he seems to always be in foul trouble.

60-54 Pistons, and Bulls are hanging around. Joakim Noah again taking it to the hole, another nice post move. Detroit offense has gone cold for the past few minutes, while Bulls look more fluid on the offensive end. Bulls are taking it to the basket, unlike the first-half. The Pistons may be beginning to miss the presence of Rasheed Wallace at this point.

Timeout for the Pistons as they lead, but by only 2, 62-60. Chauncey Billups with 23 points middle of the 3rd quarter. Billups said that the Detroit Pistons are still the team to beat, although they lost recently to the only team above them in the NBA East, the Boston Celtics. Tayshaun Prince hurt his right elbow, but will stay in the game to shoot his free throws. It feels like the Pistons are up by 20, but it is 66-60 Detroit. Pistons go to zone, to try and combat Bulls taking it to the basket. Bulls are not the best when defenses get into zone coverage against them. Game has slowed considerably.

I guess Prince is OK as he hits 3-pointer. Zone is in, and the Bulls are more than happy to start taking jump shots. The Chicago Bulls are nothing if not lovers of jump shots to begin with. Andres Nocioni hits a three to bring it to 69-66, while Billups answers with a jumper of his own. Prince with a left-handed jam, 75-67 Pistons.

Ben Gordon 7-7 from the field, and he is keeping the Bulls in this game. Larry Hughes drives one to the basket-he has been quiet. Things are getting physical, as Gordon got smacked for the 2nd time in about a minute taking it to the hole.

Detroit Pistons 81, Chicago Bulls 78

Chicago Bulls, NBA - Chicago Bulls/Detroit Pistons - Posted End of 4th Quarter

Chauncey Billups with 29 points early in 4th. Larry Hughes with circus shot, taking it to the basket to bring Bulls to 83-80. Chicago Bulls defense falters two possessions in a row. Tayshaun Prince dunks in empty paint to give Pistons 6 point lead.

Bulls are taking it more inside, even against the zone, which is a good sign. Kirk Hinrich has been a non-factor with 4 fouls. He has a habit of disappearing at times. Deng and Noah 2 on 1 break off of Luol Deng steal brings it to 91-90 Pistons, 8:00 left.

Detroit Pistons get the big shot when they need it. Tayshaun Prince answers with open deuce. The best teams always get the 2nd shot, the big defensive stop. Deng’s dunk gives him 17. Ben Gordon hits another jumper, 98-94 Pistons.

1995-1996 was the last time the Chicago Bulls swept the Detroit Pistons in the season series (4-0), and if the Bulls win tonight this feat will be duplicated. That zone is still giving the Bulls fits. Drew Gooden finally makes his presence felt with a big dunk with 4:00, the free throw making it 102-97 Pistons.

When the Detroit Pistons score 100+ points, they are 27-1-they are over 100.

Rip Hamilton with a pretty jumper, 107-99 Pistons with 3:00 left. The Detroit Pistons are just too good, that is why they are in first-place while the Bulls are floundering.
Nocioni 3-pointer brings Bulls within 5, 110-105 under 1:00. Missed Pistons shot, and of course an offensive rebound for the Pistons.

Final: Detroit Pistons 116, Chicago Bulls 109

Chicago Bulls, NBA - Pistons Upend Bulls, 116-109

The Detroit Pistons avoided a season sweep at the hands of the Chicago Bulls, as Ben Gordon went for 27 points on 10-12 FG shooting. The backcourt duo of Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton were just too much for the Bulls.

Too many offensive rebounds for the Detroit Pistons killed the Chicago Bulls tonight. Guard Chauncey Billups was the story, hitting big shot after big shot to keep the Chicago Bulls at bay. The Bulls have a big problem with Billups, in that Kirk Hinrich and Ben Gordon are no match for Billups defensively.

Kirk Hinrich was missing in action, playing only 18 minutes and was in constant foul trouble. The Chicago Bulls defense fell to pieces in the 2nd half as the Pistons were able to go in and get easy lingerie filling the lane up on Chicago. No help defenders equal easy . The Pistons led the rebounding department, 42-28.

This is not the work of a playoff team. The Bulls may get in, but it will be because of a weakened NBA East, and teams like the New Jersey Nets and Atlanta Hawks are in the same boat as the Bulls in terms of quality.

The Bulls are now 25-38 on the season, and go home to face the equally tough Utah Jazz, at the United Center on Tuesday night.
